How to Play Word Scramble: Rules, Controls and Tips
25 Oct 2026
A word scramble — sometimes called a word jumble or anagram puzzle — is a game where the letters of a word are shuffled, and you rearrange them back into a real word. The classic version appeared in newspapers as Jumble.
The basic rules
- Look at the scrambled letters.
- Rearrange them into a real word that uses every letter once.
- Solve before the timer runs out to score.
Controls
- Shuffle — re-mix the remaining letters.
- Reveal — fill in one correct letter.
- Hint — show the first letter.
Tips
- Look for common endings first: -ed, -er, -ing, -ly, -tion.
- Group the vowels and work out what consonants fit around them.
- Try prefixes — re-, un-, pre- and dis- unlock a lot of words.
- If you’re forcing a word that doesn’t fit, clear it and reshuffle.
- Save your reveals for the longer words at the end.
